Description
What is manganese?
The essential trace element manganese has many important functions in the body. It is an indispensable component of enzymes that control carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism and are thus responsible for the formation of important endogenous compounds.
The mitochondria are the energy powerhouses of our cells and need manganese for the function of the enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD). This enzyme protects them from aggressive free radicals and ensures the cell's energy supply. Manganese-dependent enzymes also play an important role in the formation of connective tissue, cartilage and bone. The main storage sites of manganese in the human body are the liver, bones, kidneys and pancreas.
Manganese in our food
Manganese is mainly found in plant-based foods. Manganese-rich foods include (wholegrain) cereal products such as bread, wheat germ, oatmeal, millet or rice, but also legumes, flaxseed and nuts as well as green leafy vegetables and dark berries (blueberries, aronia berries) or prunes. However, animal-based foods are comparatively low in manganese.
Manganese as a supplement
Manganese from NaturesPlus contains 50 mg of manganese per tablet. One pack provides 90 tablets.
Hint:
Food supplements are not intended to be a substitute for a balanced and varied diet.
